Description

Walter Darby Bannard (b. 1934, New Haven; d. 2016, Miami), a leading figure in the development of Color Field painting, had over one hundred solo exhibitions during his lifetime, and was included in the seminal exhibitions “Post-Painterly Abstraction,” curated by Clement Greenberg at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1964, and “The Responsive Eye,” organized by William Seitz at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1965. Bannard served as the chair of the art and art history department at the University of Miami from 1989 to 1992 and taught at that institution until 2016.
