Description
Employing sculpture, drawing, wearables, site-specific murals, and performance, the work of Guadalupe Maravilla (b. 1976, San Salvador, El Salvador) sheds light on the collective anxieties that stem from the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis at the United States-Mexico border. Part of the first wave of unaccompanied children to arrive in the United States due to the Central American civil wars of the 1980s, Maravilla has firsthand knowledge of the sustained trauma that undocumented immigrants experience, which has driven him to incorporate healing practices—such as gong baths—into his intricate and politically charged objects and performances. “Guadalupe Maravilla: Portals” at ICA Miami is his first solo museum show.
